Tubber G.A.A History

Club History

Tubber G.A.A. club as we know it today was founded in 1979 after a number of years had passed without a club in the parish. At the club's first meeting Joe Grennan was elected chairman. In the early years an adult team was fielded in the junior football championship and this team came close to making the break-through and winning the County Junior title on a few occasions. The club's first success at any level was recorded in 1982 when St. Colmcille's Geals won the county Minor "B" Football title. This team which was an amalgamation of the Tubber and Durrow clubs comprised of a lot of promising young Tubber players.

ProgrammeDuring this time the club used Duff's field for home fixtures but plans were underway to purchase and develop a superior playing field. This was achieved in 1984 and levelling work commenced immediatly. By 1986 most of this work was completed, thanks in no small part to efforts of club members who picked stones from the field before going to their workplaces each morning. By now also the young minor talent of 1982 was beginning to make an impact on the adult scene and when the services of Dinny Wynne from Cloghan were acquired to train the team in 1986 he managed to blend this youth with the existing experience in the club and bring the Junior Title back to Tubber. This title was secured as a result of a one point victory over Doon in the final.(see team photo).

The team was not content with this win however and in 1988 the County Intermediate crown was brought to the parish this time at expense of Durrow in the final when one point again seperated the sides.(see team photo). Work had been completed on the new playing field and dressing rooms at this point and the grand opening was held in 1989 with Offaly and Westmeath playing a Senior Football Challenge. The field which is one of the finest in the county has hosted many top quality games in the Offaly Senior Championships since. The Intermediate win promoted Tubber to Senior "B" grade and with their first attempt this title was won in 1989.(see team photo). Since 1989 the club has played at senior grade in the county championship and while this title has eluded the club, so far, many notable championship victories have been achieved along the way. Due to increased interest in adult competition a Junior "B" team was filded in the late 80's. This team went on to win the county Junior "B" title in 1991, around this time also a hurling team was entered in the Junior "C" championship and success came their way in 1993 with a county title win. During this time the club has produced many fine players some of whom have worn the green white and gold of Offaly with distinction. These include:John Moran - Leinster medal, Pauric Moran - Leinster and All-Ireland U21 medals, Gerry robbins - Leinster Minor medal and of course Ciaran Mc Manus - Leinster U21, Leinster senior, National League medals. Ciaran has also won a Sigerson Cup Medal with U.C.D. and represented Ireland in two International rules series against Austrailia.

In underage competition meanwhile the 80's looked promising with narrow defeats at county final stage in under-14 (1986) and under-16 (1988) but it has been in recent years that underage football has really taken off in the club with excellent organisation at this level.

The recent past has also seen the establishment of a top quality Ladies Football team in the club. A Tunior title was won in 1999 (see team photo) and the girls were unlucky to loose at the final hurdle in this years senior competition.

J.GrennanOff the field the club has always taken part in and excelled in Scor na Nog and Senior Scor with numeruos county tiles won. The club has also achieved All-Ireland titles at scor na nog - Camillus Hiney & David Sheridan - Instrumental Music and Tanya Dunne - Recitation 1987 while Andy Sheridan recheed the All-Ireland Senior Scor final - Recitation. The club has also contested a Senior All-Ireland final in the novelty act section while Tubber set dancers who won the county final in 1987 danced in Croke Park on All Ireland Hurling Final day in 1998.
On the social scene club members have always been to the forefront organising trips away and various functions. Two recent examples of this work include a celebration barbeque to mark the Club's 21st anniversary and a very successfull trip to the Canary islands this september.

No history of Tubber G.A.A. club would be complete without special mention of Joe Grennan - the club's first chairman (Pictured - left). Joe held the position of chairman for 18 years in all before finally stepping down last year. His contribution to the club has been immeasurable in those years and a huge debt of thanks is owed to him.
